CD Calls For Prosecution Of Ondo Commissioner, Police Chief

By Seyi Gesinde - 05.07.2008

The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has called on the Police High Command and Prof. Maurice Iwu-led Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately commence the prosecution of a Commissioner in Ondo State and a police chief who were alleged of electoral malpractices during last year’s general elections in the country.

They are the Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Yemi Alao and an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr. Chris Oloyede.  The call was made by the Oyo State Chairman of the Campaign for Democracy (CD), Comrade Adewumi Olowoniyi in a statement issued in Ibadan on Friday.

As stated: “In separate judgments delivered by the Ondo State Elections Tribunals in Akure last Wednesday, the Judge, Mr. Justice Ijem Onwuamegbu berated the Commissioner for Justice and the Attorney-General for signing forms EC&B and EC&C being result sheets for Ajowa/Igasi/Igedegede wards and the results at the constituency collaboration centre contrary to Section 46(1) of the 2006 Electoral Act.

“The Judge was piqued by how the number one law officer in the state could be involved in the breaching of the law that he was supposed to protect.

“Justice Nimpar Yargathar in another ruling condemned ASP Chris Oloyede for signing result sheets as an agent of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
