My wife sent me away from my house!

Monica Taiwo - updated: Friday 22-08-2008

Dear Taiwo,
I am in a total mess and I don’t know how to handle the situation in my home any longer. I have been away from home for over two weeks now, I want your advice on what to do and how I can handle this situation. My wife sent me away from our home, it is funny isn’t it? The situation is weighing me down because I am as guilty as hell. Don’t get me wrong, I did not leave because I cannot handle the situation but because I don’t want to do anything dramatic, but she is really pushing me to the wall.

Women and the way they behave because I offended her now, she’s not giving me peace in the house, even an opportunity to apoligise or correct the wrong. I have also warned her before now not to look for trouble, but she would not listen. I married Tina my wife, about two years ago, she is not my first wife, actually she is the third one. Don’t castigate me yet, please, take time to read the story of my life. My first wife was a lady I impregnated while I was in the secondary school. She dropped out of school when her parents learnt about her pregnancy while I continued school. I finished my WAEC and gained admission into Yaba Tech. After my OND, one of my uncles introduced me into a business of buying and selling of building materials and I began to make good money. I made my first million in my mid 20’s and you know the way it is, money comes with women and all sorts of friends. My mother advised me to take a wife, and her choice was the lady I impregnated in school. I had no objection to this, we got married and she gave birth to another child for me, this time, a girl.

As time went on, I discovered that she couldn't blend with my lifestyle, inferiority complex became an issue in our home, so I decided to take another wife and the choice then was my current girlfriend, Toyin. Some of my friends were against the decision, but I had already made up my mind and there was no going back. When Toyin came in, we all lived together for some months but eventually I had to send my first wife and the two kids back to our home town to stay my with mother. I made sure I took good care of her. Life with Toyin wasn’t a smooth one, but I seldom complained to anyone because I made my choice, and a lot of my friends who knew her advised me against taking her as my wife initially.

Anyway, one of my friends came to my office with the news that changed my life one afternoon. He walked in and introduced me to the American Visa Lottery, I thought he was only pulling my legs, but I tried it and won. We were the first beneficiaries of the scheme; my friend and I took our families and settled down in the U.S. Toyin had two kids before we left for America and I also took my first two kids, but the largesse did not extend to their mother. In the USA, Toyin gave birth to another child, bringing the number of her children to three. Things were okay with us, I got a good job and she did too, because she was a trained secretary. The US Visa Lottery was not this popular then and we lived comfortably well, until she began to move with some Nigerian women. She started misbehaving and she became unruly. This behaviour of hers became so unbearable that one day I was forced to beat her up. Before I was able to say jack, it became a serious case and i had to come back home after about 11 years, because I could no longer withstand the heat and different conditions I was facing over there in America.

Fortunately, my kids were doing well so I had no fears leaving them back there. When I came back to Nigeria, I was able to settle down with the help and assistance of some of my friends. It was during the time I was trying to settle down that I met Tina. Initially, my friends were against my union with her but my argument was that I didn’t want to mess around with different ladies, sticking to one lady and even marrying her would help me control myself. If I knew, I would have taken my time before making my choice. Tina hid her true self from me until after I had married her. She is the only lady I married properly and this is the most painful aspect of it all.

First, I discovered just two weeks after our wedding that she had a child or aged about Seven years. She never told me, although our courtship was rather short, but that not withstanding. Then, Tina is so troublesome and it takes the grace of God to cope with her. Whenever we drive out or on any outing, shopping or even in the church, I dare not greet a woman, if I do, the quarrel it would generate may not end until after a week or more. Meanwhile, before I met her, I had met a lady whose brother used to be a friend of mine back in the U.S. He gave me some money and some things to deliver to her, and we became close and friendly.

In fact, she was the one who helped me to get my present accommodation, where Tina and I live now. Because of her input in purchasing the place, our home is quite close to where she resides with two of her other siblings. We stay in a residential estate. I made sure I defined my relationship with this friend of mine after I married Tina but she wasn’t satisfied. Whenever I greet this lady, she will start making trouble. At a time she asked me to delete her number from my phone, but I refused, because sometimes when her brother who is taking care of some of my concerns in the U.S. wants to reach me and he cannot get me or my phone, he will call his sister and leave whatever message he has for me. I have tried all my best to explain to Tina that I have no sexual relationship with this lady, but she just would not believe me.

There was a time I travelled back to the U.S. to see my other kids, Tina was pregnant and because I did not want to leave her all alone at home I asked her to invite her younger ones to come over and stay with her as they were on holidays. I did not know then that I was inviting trouble. As soon as I travelled, Tina took them to Joann's (that’s the lady name) house to warn her to steer clear of her husband. I don’t really know what happened and why she visited Joann's house the second time and beat Joann’s siblings up. It became a police case and when I returned, it took my plea and some of my friends' interventions for Joann to drop the charges against my wife and her siblings.since then, a cold war existed between them.

Recently, I had a cause to go and see Joann, I had a message for her from my friend; I intentionally did not tell my wife so she won’t start another trouble, but her younger sister who stays with us saw me when I was talking to Joann, she reported to Tina and the next thing she did was to leave the house accompanied by her brother and sister, with the intention of beating Joann up in her house. Unfortunately for the three of them, they met a stiff opposition and the three of them were beaten blue black.

A neighbour called to tell me what was going on and by the time I got home, Tina and her siblings were wounded and in pool of their own blood. I rushed them to the hospital where they were treated and Tina insisted that I should get Joann and her friends and sisters arrested. I refused and my refusal is the root cause of the problem I am facing at home, in fact, that is the reason why I have left home for about two weeks now. I don’t want to beat her up, because I know what beating up a woman has cost me. Neither do I have any justification to arrest Joann and her people. Please what do I do?

Folaranmi, Abuja.
