Bar conference opens today

ALL is set for the annual and delegates’ conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) scheduled to open officially today at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Expectedly, a teeming number of Nigerian lawyers and judges, lecturers, corporate counsel and those in active practice, including politicians will storm the seat of power for the momentous gathering of the largest assembly of lawyers in the country.

This year’s conference themed ‘ How Federalism Accommodates Diversity and Strengthens Democracy” will feature lectures, fora, group sessions where distinguished and celebrated intellectuals would share their wealth of knowledge and experience with the legal community.

At the opening session slated for today, the Chairman, Forum of Federalism, George Anderson will deliver the keynote address while the Special Guest of honour is Dr. A. P.J Kalam, the immediate past president of India.

Even though the emergence of the new bar president, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) is not novel, delegates and attendees still look forward to an exciting moment of voting in a preferred candidate for other open elective posts.

The tenure of the outgoing president, Chief Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), though fraught with some challenges, could be safely said to have lent its voice and served as watchdog in the current fight against corruption.

The Agbakoba-led executive also strengthened the Bar through the establishment of additional forums calculated to provide ample opportunities to share knowledge and experience an also provide a viable means of strong legal network.

On Thursday, August 28, the high point of the event would be the election of a new set of executives by selected delegates.The Akeredolu-led executive would expectedly pilot the affairs of the association for another couple of years.
